Purba Pachim completes its 10th years in 2014. A decade is not a very long path for a group theatre , but Purba Pachim has been able to keep a significant mark and we are indeed proud of such glorious past.
In 2004, Purba Paschim initiated its production with Tagore’s BISWARJAN. The original script of Tagore’s was edited by Sunil Gangopadhayay, the noted novelist & poet. Sunil Gangopadhayay added some new dimension while Soumitra Mitra directed this production. Bratya Basu’s BABLI was the second venture which had been produced in 2005 made its way to USA, France & England.
Several national theatre personalities have also enriched the efforts of our group by their generous presence…like Amol Palekar, Mohan Agashe, Sarrmila Tagore,, Nandita Das, Sabana Azmi, In its 10th year, Purba Paschim is going to premiere AKKEL GURUM a comedy by Ujjawal Chattopadhayay and directed by Soumitra Mitra on June 29, 2014 at Madhusudan Mancha.
Exhibition is a part of this festival and” Centenary of Tagore;s RAJA”, “Khaled Chowdhury : His Works”, “Tribute to Ajitesh Bandopadhayay”, “Habib Tanvir ; His Life & Works” . Legendary theatre personnel like Girish Karnad, , Gopal Krishna Gandhi,, Bhaskar Chandravarkar, Anuradha Kapoor, Subodh Pattanaik, Kirti Jain and many others eminent personalities have visited this festival and interacted with Purba Paschim.Purba Paschim has been invited in Bharat Rang Mahotsav (2010) , North East Theatre Festival (2011), Kalinga Natya Utsab Bhubaneswar, (2013) , Banga Sanskriti Sammelan , Mumbai (2014). The Impresario India, Delhi had organized an exclusive Theatre festival at Sree Ram Centre for consecutive 3 days in 2011.
Annual Theatre Workshop is one of the yearly programme which has been jointly organized by Sangeet Natak Akademy. The group has many other activities like publication of Annual Issue, Seminar, Interaction, Library etc.
We have been able to perform at least 60 to 70 shows annually within last few years.
We are thankful to Ministry of Culture , Govt of India for their kind support through different grants . It is needless to mention that the support of various Commercial Houses, Media, Govt of West Bengal and the theatre thespian of our country have made us more committed to better theatre.
We are looking for a own space for a better tomorrow.
