Our play “Sri O Nidhubabu Kotha” revolves around Ramnidhi Gupta, the pioneer of Bengali Tappa song. A very important part of his colourful long life has been taken as centre stage in the play, that, rather, may be referred as a story of triangular human love and relationship.

Srimoti, a very young beautiful and vivacious girl with sweet musical voice, is, by destiny, a Hetaera (Mistress) of Raja Mahananda Roy, who is also a great adorer as well as a friend of Nidhubabu. Raja Mahananda, being attracted by Srimoti’s great singing instinct, wants her teaching to be done by Nidhubabu and so he brings her at the Nidhubabu’s Aakhada (Arena). And, the tension and turbulence of the play begins.

Srimoti gets a great unparalleled ‘Guru’ (Teacher) and ‘Guru’ gets an intelligent and dedicated ‘Shishya’ (disciple) who learns all tunes with ease and who has a voracious appetite of learning the mesmerising classical song Tappa. A relation of deep love and respect evolves out easily where the disciple is ready to surrender with all of her to Nidhubabu.

But Raja Mahananda cannot not digest the disciplined and strict learning process of Nidhubabu and has started to misunderstand and doubt the relation of Guru-Shishya as carnal love, and, conflicts of minds create a climactic suspense.

But the finale reveals the truth that Srimoti is actually a worshipper to his Guru and lover of King Mahananda Roy. All the layers of the story are interwoven with finer Tappa songs of Nidhubabu.
